Vote NO on Charleston Local Questions 1 and 2.

Hear directly from Coastal Conservation League Executive Director Faith Rivers James on what the I-526/Mark Clark Expressway plan is and why you should Vote NO on Charleston Local Questions 1 and 2.

I-526/Mark Clark Expressway is an interstate in Charleston County that runs from Mount Pleasant to West Ashley. Charleston County is proposing to extend the highway from the current terminus at Savannah Highway onto Johns Island and over to James Island to connect to the James Island Connector.

This project would displace homes and businesses, destroy over 38 acres of saltwater and freshwater wetlands, destroy nearly 50 acres of James Island County Park, and increase suburban sprawl on rural Johns Island.

On November 5th, Charleston County residents will be asked to vote on a Special Sales and Use Tax that prioritizes the outdated, overpriced, and destructive Mark Clark / I-526 Extension, draining funding from other more pressing priorities across the county.

I-526 extension plan

The I-526 Extension is the only priority project listed for this tax, meaning the money would first be spent to fund these nine miles of road, leaving whatever is left over on other much-needed projects in the county.

We have more pressing needs in Charleston County, and shouldn’t be spending this tax on destroying wetlands, open space, homes and communities.

Charleston Local Questions 1 and 2 reduce funding for the greenbelt program, which helps fund conservation projects for land protection and the establish public access to land, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and public transportation.

Save our sea islands.
Save our Stono river.
Save our settlement communities.
